Generation Y

Generation Y was born from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s and is called ‘the digital immigrants’ or the ’computer generation’.

They are from the technological revolution which has formed their lives through the social media, and they communicate constantly and in all directions. The generation was also formed by the surrounding world, characterized by the fall of the Berlin Wall, the war in Ex-Yugoslavia, the No to the Euro, and 9/11 2001.

The Y generation is characterized by self-assured individuals who are constantly searching for meaning, they are ready for change, tolerant and in constant search for information

Generation Y on the labor market

Generation Y typically asks: “As an employee in this job, what’s in it for me?” They want a job that makes sense to them.

The Y Generation was the first generation to openly and naturally have claims. Typically working for entirely different reasons than the wage, they are motivated by the meaning and content of their job. They require frequent feedback on their work and potential for development. The Y generation does not count their working hours – they want autonomy and hence it is most unfortunate to assign them fixed working hours.

The only way to good results is to give them freedom. Generation Y is willing to work hard, but they require influence and a voice which will be heard in return. They are not authoritative in relation to their colleagues or superiors, for that matter. They are willing to lead others, but only if they are allowed to be who they really are. Provide them with definite bounds, be supportive, and function as a mentor or sparring partner.
